<p>We examine nuanced dynamics of human-sloth bear interactions in central Gujarat. We focus on local perceptions and attitudes toward sloth bears, identifying the underlying factors contributing to diminished tolerance levels. 792 individuals were interviewed to assess views on sloth bears and their conservation. Most tribal respondents perceive coexisting with sloth bears as a significant risk to human life. Support for sloth bear conservation is low, with many believing the species does not require protection.</p>
