Ethno-Ornithology: Exploring the Intersection between Human Culture and Avian Science

Throughout history, humans have had a deep and complex connection with birds. The study of how humans and birds interact has the potential to provide valuable insights for the advancement of bird ecology and conservation. This review illustrates how this area has developed over time, what its main subtopics are, and what directions it should take in the future. Within ethno-ornithology, four major themes stand out: The study of birds in archaeological findings and in ancient societies; the examination of traditional and indigenous knowledge about bird ecology; the exploration of the symbolic roles birds play in the arts and media; and the investigation of various ways humans and birds interact. By acknowledging the cultural and historical importance of birds, modern-day ornithologists can bridge the gap between scientific research and public engagement, helping to raise awareness and foster for efforts aimed at bird conservation.
