<p>Previous studies show that, in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions, United States-China research collaboration has declined in terms of co-publication volume, whereas European Union-China research outputs have mostly showed resilience. However, the trajectory of Canada-China research relations during this period remains unexplored. To address such a knowledge gap, our study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the co-authored publications from 2012 to 2023 using Web of Science records. Our findings reveal a similar downturn in Canada-China co-publications, and applying Social Cognitive Theory, we explore the reasons behind this change. We also highlight the unfavorable impact on Canada’s research growth, which previously benefitted from cooperation with China. Moreover, we discuss the potential implications for Canada’s science and technology sectors, and specifically Canadian researchers of Chinese origin.</p>
