Assessment of genetic diversity in selected yellow-flaked jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) genotypes using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers

The present investigation was conducted to assess the molecular diversity among 25 yellow flaked jackfruit genotypes using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Yellow-flaked jackfruits possess desirable fruit quality characteristics that make them suitable for both fresh consumption and industrial processing. Consequently, assessing their genetic diversity is essential for their conservation, utilization, and genetic improvement. Among 30 SSR primers tested, 26 primers amplified 216 loci with an average of 5.88 polymorphic loci per primer, indicating high polymorphism. Twenty-four primers exhibited polymorphism information content (PIC) values between 0.5 and 0.9, with an average PIC value of 0.728, demonstrating their effectiveness in genotype differentiation. Genetic similarity among the genotypes ranged from 55 to 85%. Dendrogram and principal coordinate analyses identified All Season II-B as the most divergent genotype. The study revealed considerable molecular diversity among the selected yellow flaked jackfruit genotypes, highlighting their potential use in breeding programmes for improvement of important quantitative and qualitative traits.
