Distribution, phytochemical diversity, and ethnopharmacological significance of the genus Boerhavia Vaill. ex L., with special reference to Boerhavia diffusa L.
摘要
The genus Boerhavia has been widely used in traditional medicine since ancient times. It is known as Punarnava in the scriptures. There are two types: Rakta Punarnava and Shweta Punarnava, now identified as B. diffusa and B. erecta. Several species, including B. diffusa, B. repens, B. procumbens, and B. erecta, have been extensively used in ethnomedicine for various ailments. Phytochemical research reveals a rich diversity of bioactive compounds in the genus, which explains its pharmacological effects. Despite the well-documented medicinal potential of some species, the taxonomy of Boerhavia remains complex and diverse. Many species are still underexplored. Notably, B. diffusa exhibits significant morphological variability under different environmental conditions, further complicating its taxonomy. Since ancient times, it has been the most frequently reported species in this genus worldwide. Therefore, this article focuses on the genus Boerhavia and its important species, especially B. diffusa. It provides a comprehensive overview of its distribution, phytochemistry, and ethnopharmacological significance.
