Genetic analysis of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) genotypes from Azerbaijan using simple sequence repeat markers

South Caucasus is one of the center of domestication of cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera subsp. vinifera) with centuries of back history of winemaking and grapevine breeding. Despite rich biodiversity, lack of genetic information, hindering the effective conservation and targeted utilization of valuable genetic resources of grapevine. In this study the SSR genetic profiling strategy was used to determine genetic identity of accessions presumed to be autochthonous cultivars from the collection the Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking Ministry of Agriculture Republic of Azerbaijan. Additional SSR markers were used for genotyping beyond the nine internationally applied for grapevine cultivar identification. The number of alleles amplified by twenty four SSR primer pairs ranged from 5 (VRZAG83, VVIN16, VVIN73, VVMD25) to 15 (VMC4f3.1) with an average of 9 alleles. PIC values ranged from 0.2541 (VVIN73) to 0.8630 (VVIP31) with mean values of 0.6954. The mean values of gene diversity and heterozygosity were 0.7291 and 0.7924 respectively. Based on obtained SSR data one case of misnames/homonyms, 29 synonyms and three clones were revealed. Among 54 analyzed accessions 24 different genotypes were found due to synonyms and homonyms of some cultivars. Results provided useful information concerning genetic structure of accessions by revealing several cases of misnames homonyms and synonyms. The obtained genetic data confirmed the richness of under-explored grapevine genetic resources of Azerbaijan.
