Collection of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) landraces with agro-pastoralist preferences in the arid and semi-arid areas of the somali regional state, Eastern Ethiopia

Sorghum landraces are a vital reservoir of genetic diversity essential for crop improvement. Ethiopia, particularly the Somali Region, possesses a rich and underutilized sorghum gene pool. This study was conducted to collect and document sorghum landraces from the Somali Region of Ethiopia, with a focus on understanding farmers’ selection criteria, preferences, and the special uses associated with different landraces. To achieve these aims, both primary and secondary data were utilized, and SAS software was employed to analyze the effects of different variables on sorghum landraces. A total of 56 distinct landraces were identified across 11 woredas, although only 28 were available and collected for further evaluation. Farmers in the region use various indigenous criteria to select and prioritize landraces, reflecting both cultural knowledge and local needs. Four collective folk names for sorghum were recorded, highlighting the ethno botanical richness of the area. Additionally, six landraces were classified as threatened due to declining cultivation and environmental pressures. Seed quality evaluation focused on five parameters. Among these, physiological purity (65% to 99%) and 100-seed weight (1.5 g to 3.31 g) displayed the greatest variability. These findings underscore both the genetic richness and the vulnerability of sorghum landraces in the Somali Region. Effective conservation and utilization strategies are urgently needed to safeguard these valuable resources for future breeding and adaptation efforts.
