Identification of agronomically superior and multiple disease resistant common bean genotypes under Western Himalayan conditions

Western Himalayan region (WHR) is a hot spot of common bean variability. However, diseases like angular leaf spot (ALS), anthracnose (ANT) and bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) cause severe damage to crop and reduce yields. In the present study, 224 diverse accessions of common bean were characterised for eight agronomic traits and three major diseases during summer 2022 and 2023. There was significant genetic variability for agronomic traits including maturity and yield components as revealed by significant mean squares in the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for augmented design for all traits as well as broad range and high coefficient of variation (CV). Seed yield had positive association with pods per plant (0.70), 100-seed weight (0.55) and days to maturity (0.36). Principal component analysis revealed that first four components accounted for 76.54% of variation, with the first two components accounting for 47.30%. We observed a variable genotypic response to all three diseases. For ALS, in 2022 and 2023, 81 and 24 showed resistance response, indicating higher disease pressure in 2023. Out of 224 genotypes screened, 77 and 99 showed resistance in 2022 and 2023 respectively against anthracnose, due to more favourable weather in 2022, causing higher incidence of anthracnose. Also, for BCMV, variable response was seen in two years with 91 and 47 genotypes showing resistance in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The lower number of resistant genotypes for ALS and BCMV and higher incidence for ANT in 2022 could be due to lower temperature in 2022 leading variable response. We have identified five common bean genotypes (WB-82, WB-26, WB-92, WB-1607 and WB-123) that showed resistance to all three diseases viz., angular leaf spot, anthracnose and bean common mosaic virus. We also validated some earlier reported sources of resistance as well as identified new sources of resistance for ALS, ANT and BCMV that should facilitate development of multi-disease resistant beans for WHR.
