<p>Species of the Myrtaceae family exhibit a broad geographic distribution and significant morphological variability, yet many display pronounced morphological similarities that complicate accurate identification. The complex systematic relationships within the Myrteae tribe pose challenges to conservation efforts and compromise the accuracy of evolutionary modeling. This complexity is evident in the case of <i>cambuí</i>, found in the state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil, where it is harvested through extractivism by local communities. Morphologically similar plants are variably identified in the literature as <i>Myrciaria floribunda</i>, <i>M. tenella</i>, or <i>Myrciaria</i> sp., leading to uncertainty about the identity of the plant known as <i>cambuí</i> in the coastal restinga areas of southern Alagoas. To address this uncertainty taxonomic about, phylogenetic reconstruction was performed using individuals with variation in fruit color, based on sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analysis, including 54 Myrtaceae species, indicated that <i>cambuí</i> from Alagoas shares a common ancestor with <i>M. floribunda</i> and <i>M. tenella</i>. However, the five <i>Alagoan cambuí</i> accessions analysed were phylogenetically closer to <i>M. glazioviana</i>, with <i>M. tenella</i> as their closest ancestor. Genetic diversity among individuals allowed the formation of two groups, although these were not associated with fruit color. One group showed recombination events with individuals from the <i>M. floribunda</i> population in southeastern Brazil, suggesting that part of the genetic diversity is linked to the ancestral population that also gave rise to <i>M. floribunda</i>. The <i>cambuí</i> plants from Alagoas are phylogenetically distinct from the species they are most often associated in the literature and possess genetic diversity that justifies their preservation. Nevertheless, fully resolving the species identification of <i>cambuí</i> from Alagoas requires the analysis of additional individuals and other genomic regions commonly employed in Myrtaceae phylogenetic research.</p>
