Effect of self-pollination and open allopollination on the qualitative and physicochemical attributes of pomegranate fruits

Pollination is a critical biological process that significantly influences fruit yield and quality, with its efficiency often shaped by environmental conditions and the interaction between genetic and external factors. This study investigates, in two years, the impact of pollination type on the physical and biochemical attributes of a collection of pomegranate cultivars growing under Moroccan environmental conditions. Results revealed significant influences of pollination type, year, and genotype on most studied traits, including fruit weight, juice content, total sugars, total soluble solids, and anthocyanins. Open pollination generally enhanced pollination success rate, fruit weight, juice content, and biochemical quality across genotypes. Notably, open-pollinated fruits of ‘Grenade Rouge’ and ‘Zheri Automne’ exhibited higher weights and sugar content, while juice content peaked in ‘Ounk Hmam’ under open pollination (53.29% in 2022). However, self-pollination produced comparable or superior results in select genotypes, such as higher juice content in ‘Zheri Automne’ (39.72% in 2022). Biochemically, the data revealed that fruits from the open pollination mode exhibited the highest phenolic content, with ‘Grenade Rouge’ showing the peak value of 245.32 mg GAE/100 mL. Additionally, the ‘Wonderful’ cultivar exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with a DPPH inhibition of 86.45%, outperforming those under self-pollination conditions. Interactions between year, pollination type, and genotype highlighted complex relationships, with open pollination demonstrating a stronger positive impact in most cases. This research underscores the importance of pollination strategies in optimizing pomegranate fruit quality and offers valuable insights for improving cultivation practices.
