Ethnobotany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, phytotoxicity, and industrial applications of Ajuga bracteosa Wall. ex Benth.: a review

The genus Ajuga contains over 40 species and the predominantly used species in traditional medicine is Ajuga bracteosa Wall. ex Benth. Ajuga bracteosa is a gift of nature to the tribal communities for the cure of many ailments. Biological research demonstrated that Ajuga species confers anti-malignancy, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-leishmanial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-malarial, anti-helminthic, and diuretic properties. This plant is also utilized to cure arthritis, paralysis, and gout. The purpose of this study was to consolidate the information on traditional medicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, phytotoxicity, and industrial applications of A. bracteosa. Data was gathered from various search engines such as Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, etc. Information on the aforementioned topics from 105 references ranging between 1948 and 2025 was meticulously organized and included in this review. A. bracteosa is considered a potential herb with prospective health benefits. More than 40 chemical constituents belonging to the classes phytoecdysteroids, sterols, iridoid glycosides, flavanoids, diterpenoids, neo-clerodane, withanolides, etc. have so far been isolated from various plant parts of A. bracteosa. The pharmacological potential of this plant is mainly attributed to the presence of ajuganane, β-sitosterol, and ajugapitin. Due to the enormous ethnomedicinal importance of A. bracteosa, many researchers across the globe are paying attention to its exploration for the sake of contemporary effective therapeutic products. In the present review, an effort has been made to give an overview of ethnobotanical uses, chemical constituents, as well as the medicinal importance of A. bracteosa.
