Phenotypic characterization of Mangalore melon (Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis var. acidulus) accessions from Southern India based on qualitative and quantitative traits

The Mangalore melon (Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis var. acidulus Naudin), commonly referred to as the non-desert cucumber, is cultivated in the coastal regions of southern India. It is highly valued in traditional South Indian cuisine for its nutritional and medicinal properties. An extensive investigation into its genetic diversity assessed 80 accessions from the regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Goa, focusing on 20 qualitative and 21 quantitative characteristics. Significant variation was identified in 11 qualitative and 14 quantitative traits. Variations in fruit shape (round, oblate, elliptical, pyriform, ovate, elongate) and color (patchy green with white stripes, dark green, light green, yellow, golden yellow, orange) were found to influence breeding potential and consumer preferences. Geographical clustering suggested regional adaptations for qualitative traits. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences even among the quantitative traits. Variations were noted for number of male flowers, sex ratio, average fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, seed cavity length, flesh thickness, number of seeds per fruit, TSS and fruit yield per vine. Cluster analysis categorized accessions into five groups based on quantitative traits and geographical distribution. Principal component analysis indicated that flesh thickness, average fruit weight, number of male flowers, sex ratio, number of female flowers, vine length, seed diameter, and seed length were primary contributors to genetic diversity. Accessions MS-6, MS-74, MS-79, MS-30, and MS-28 demonstrated higher yields and favorable traits, including superior number of fruits per vine, average fruit weight, fruit length, and flesh thickness compared to check cultivars. These findings provide valuable insights for breeding programs, emphasizing morphological traits to enhance fruit quality and adaptability.
