Phenotypic diversity and assessment of genes linked to diseases and yield in Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf

Cymbopogoncitratus grows in many countries under different climatic and geographical conditions but remain limited to disease resistance and genomic information. There is no study carried out to gain information on the phenotypic and genomic diversity among the accessions of C. citratusat intra-specific level. Therefore, the phenotypic and molecular diversity of 50 accessions (25 wild, 25 cultivated) of C. citratus collected from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and United State was assessed in the present study. The aim of the study is to compare the phenotypic and molecular diversity among the accessions of C. citratus to find out the more diverse accessions. The phenotypic traits were assessed by selecting ten tillers of each accession. The studied phenotypic variation was based on 13 quantitative traits. Forty primers from the rice genome were selected for profiling the genome of C. citratus. Additionally, the effect of cultivation on phenotypic traits and genetic expression of C. citratus was evaluated. The results showed the significant phenotypic variation among the accessions of C. citratus. The most striking phenotypic traits were leaf number, tiller number, fresh and dry weight. The maximum polymorphism was observed with HSP, CAD2, BI1 and MSRMK genes. Cultivated accessions exhibited higher genetic diversity than wild accessions based on polymorphism and phenotypic traits. The accessions 38,452, 38,456, 384,517, 384,518 and 384,527 were genetically more diversed. The results of the molecular and phenotypic characterization revealed a strong relationship between the morphological traits and genetic diversity.
