A review of Kadamba (Neolamarckia cadamba): an invaluable medicinal plant

Neolamarckia cadamba, commonly known as Kadamba, is a highly valued tree species native to India and a member of the Rubiaceae family. Renowned for its ecological and economic significance, Kadamba contributes to soil enrichment and serves as a vital habitat for diverse wildlife. Its rapid growth rate makes it particularly suited for reforestation initiatives and agroforestry systems, offering a sustainable solution for restoring degraded landscapes and advancing land-use practices. The tree’s various tissues-including its leaves, bark, stems, roots, seeds, and fruits are rich in bioactive compounds such as saponins, quinoline, indole alkaloids, cadambine, and chlorogenic acid. Despite its potential, progress in improving Kadamba through genetic and genomic research, as well as in fully harnessing its medicinal properties, remains limited. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the genetic and genomic research conducted on Kadamba, emphasizing its bioactive compounds and their pharmacological properties. Furthermore, it identifies existing research gaps and proposes future research directions to expand the potential applications of Kadamba.
