Evaluation of Eclipta alba L. selections for higher biomass and bioactive compound

Known by several names, including Bhringaraj and False Daisy, Eclipta alba (L.) is a highly valued and well-known medicinal plant in India. It is an annual herb that belongs to Asteraceae family and is reported to be best for liver disease. This herb has a long history of use in ethnomedicine. An estimated 2000–5000 tons are traded annually. On the other hand, overexploitation of wild populations of this species is the result of strong domestic demand. In order to cultivate E. alba and lessen the strain on the wild population, the current study aims to identify elite germplasm from accessions collected from several places in India through an analysis of growth, yield, and content variation of primary active constituent. HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) was used to analyze the wedelolactone content of 142 wild accessions of E. alba. Comparative analysis of five elite lines showed a significant variance in wedelolactone throughout the entire plant, ranging from 0.09 to 0.53% on a dry weight basis. These lines were evaluated for two years for growth, yield, and active principle. One elite accession (IIHR Sel EA 43) with 0.5% of the wedelolactone was identified with higher growth and yield attributes. This line is found to be suitable for large-scale commercial cultivation of E. alba.
