Understanding the drivers and impacts of urban sprawl in Ghana’s secondary cities
摘要
Secondary cities in Ghana and the Global South, at large, are experiencing rapid population increase and urban growth; however, little is known about their dynamics of urban growth and sprawling patterns. This study, thus, assessed the factors contributing to the processes of urban sprawl in two secondary cities in Ghana, namely, Sunyani and Wa. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study administered 270 questionnaires in Sunyani and 269 in Wa to household heads, and six interviews were conducted with urban planning officials to assess the causes and effects of urban sprawl among secondary cities in Wa and Sunyani municipalities. The study found six (6) main causes of urban sprawl in Wa and Sunyani, however, a logistic regression analysis showed that population increase is the main driver of urban sprawl in Sunyani while need for privacy and use of personal vehicles were the main drivers in Wa. There were negative and positive effects of urban sprawl in the two cities. The major negative effect in the two cities were environmental degradation and loss of natural habitats. The study also found that economic development was a major positive effect of urban growth in the two cities. The study recommends the need for a balance between long-term sustainability and economic benefits, sustainable urban design, investments in public transportation, and controlled development to reduce the negative impact of urban sprawl in secondary cities.
