Considering the world cities of the southern United States: trajectories and linkages
摘要
Over the past three decades, Loughborough University’s Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) project has produced a list of cities across the globe, arranging them into ranks based on internationally-centered functions and connections. This work builds upon earlier and evolving research on global cities and their connections. The southern United States has been one of the country’s most economically-robust regions over the past half-century, as evidenced by the rise of several pivotal cities in the South and the increased globalization of these cities and the region as a whole. In light of this, the following research note will examine the cities of the southern US that are currently placed within the GaWC network. The ensuing analyses will assess: (1) how these cities are positioned within the world cities hierarchy and (2) the future trajectories for such cities and others that might ascend to this list. This work adds to the growing bodies of literature on globalization and the southern US, world city research, and points to areas of future research on the internationalization of Southern cities.
