Impact of natural disasters on farming livelihood activities in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam

The mountainous Nam Dong district in central Vietnam faces increasing risks from natural hazards, including storms, floods, landslides, and droughts. This study investigates the multidimensional impacts of such hazards on agricultural livelihoods, focusing on ethnic minority communities in the study area. Using a mixed-methods approach, time-series climate analysis (1976–2023), participatory geographic information systems (PGIS), household surveys (n = 40), and organizational interviews, the study identified disaster-prone areas and quantified their impacts on farming systems. Results revealed significant changes in crop area and land use structure, declines in perennial crop yields, and changes in cropping schedules driven by local farming systems and indigenous knowledge. Climate anomalies such as heat waves and erratic rainfall disrupt crop physiology and reduce yields, particularly for summer-autumn rice. Despite limitations in statistical significance on some variables, the empirical evidence from communities and local spatial specificity underscores the urgency of local adaptation planning. While increasing income, livelihood shifts from food crops to monocultures of acacia and rubber, which raises concerns regarding slope instability and biodiversity loss. This study highlights the value of integrating scientific forecasting with traditional ecological knowledge and spatial tools to inform adaptive land use strategies. The findings support policy transitions towards sustainable agriculture for ethnic minority communities in Vietnam and developing countries.
