Urban green spaces and public fitness infrastructure: evaluating accessibility in megacities like Shenzhen

This study investigates the development and accessibility of urban green spaces and public fitness infrastructure in Shenzhen, China, from 2018 to 2023. Using quantitative spatial analysis, we examined growth patterns, funding allocation, and accessibility levels across different districts. Results reveal significant expansion in both green spaces (450–670 hectares) and fitness facilities (120–330) over the study period. We observed an inverse correlation between accessibility levels and facility usage rates, with areas of lower accessibility paradoxically showing higher usage rates. Public–private partnerships have gradually increased their contribution to infrastructure development, though government funding remains dominant. Spatial analysis indicated uneven distribution across districts, with Nanshan and Futian showing higher concentrations of facilities compared to other districts. Our findings suggest that while Shenzhen has made substantial progress in developing urban green spaces and fitness infrastructure, accessibility barriers remain, particularly in less developed districts. These insights can inform urban planning policies aimed at promoting equitable access to health-supporting infrastructure in rapidly growing megacities.
