Analysis and monitoring of land use and land cover (LULC) changes from 1990 to 2023 in Faragouaran Municipality, Southern Mali

Monitoring changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) using satellite data provides critical insights for decision-making in land conservation, development, and resource management. This study analysed LULC changes in Faragouaran Municipality, southern Mali, from 1990 to 2023 using Landsat data at 30-m resolution for four periods (1990, 2003, 2013, and 2023). An object-oriented classification with the Support Vector Machine algorithm and visual interpretation via Orfeo Toolbox and QGIS identified four LULC classes: Agricultural area, Build-up, Savannah woodland, and Shrub savannah. Classification accuracy was validated with Kappa coefficients, achieving high accuracies: 92%, 96%, 91%, and 96% for the respective years, and Kappa values of 0.85, 0.92, 0.88, and 0.94. Over 33 years, agricultural and build-up areas expanded significantly, with annual growth rates of + 3.90% and + 7.60%, respectively, while Shrub savannah and Savannah woodland declined by − 1.11% and − 11.15%. Population growth from 5731 in 1990 to 21,032 in 2023 drove agricultural expansion from 76 to 275.56 hectares, reflecting intensified food production strategies. Rainfall analysis from 1980 to 2023 showed cycles of drought and surplus precipitation, with prolonged droughts between 1980–1988 and 1996–2007. Rainfall patterns normalized after 2008, though occasional deficits persist. These findings highlight the importance of adaptive land management strategies to address LULC changes and ensure sustainable resource use in response to demographic and climatic shifts.
