How Chengdu’s rapid urbanization and urban expansion affect urban green spaces spatially and temporally dynamics from 1990 to 2022

Urban expansion rate has increased substantially at a global level over the past 32 years. Cities house more than half of the worldwide population and urbanization continues in many countries and regions. Chengdu, having an affluent history and distinct cultural heritage, is a megacity in western China. Urbanization has been accelerating in Chengdu since 1980. Land use pattern alterations and ecological damage have occurred due to rapid urbanization. This study aims to understand and describe the relationship between urban sprawl and green infrastructure in Chengdu. This study calculates and analyzes the changes in built-up land (BuL) and green space (GS) in Chengdu for 3 time periods, namely, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2022. This is accomplished using land use data (LUD), administrative boundary vector data, a land use transfer matrix, a Landscape Expansion Index (LEI), and a Landscape Pattern Index (LPI). The Chengdu’s built-up land between 1990 and 2022 rose from 1.77 to 10.83%. GS increased from 20.35% in 1990 to 23.57% in 2022 and occupied a large amount of cropland. However, the density of GS decreased dramatically, and the distribution of GS became fragmented. Combined with the NP and PD values, it can be reflected that the number and density of landscape patches in GS have been decreasing significantly from year to year, showing a trend of fragmentation. Programs and suggestions are put forward to construct a comprehensive blue and green ecological network space to be used as references and insights for cities that face the same problems and for researchers who want to conduct similar studies.
