Analysis of the renewal of Nanjing Confucius temple block based on fold theory
摘要
The sustainable renewal of historical and cultural blocks is of great significance for urban development. As a six—dynasty ancient capital, Nanjing is endowed with profound cultural heritage. Its historical and cultural blocks serve as a micro—model of traditional Chinese historical and cultural blocks, integrating multiple cultural elements such as imperial examination culture, educational culture, commercial culture, and folk culture. In modern society, these blocks have experienced a complex process of protection, development, and regeneration. However, during the protection and development process, several issues have cropped up, including excessive commercialization, a waning cultural atmosphere, functional fragmentation, and a weakening of spatial vitality. Previously, relying solely on methods like questionnaire surveys to investigate such situations was overly subjective, which might lead to fluctuations in policy formulation and implementation. Therefore, this study applies a coupling—coordination degree model. The objective is to objectively explore, in a mathematical manner, the current development status of four key functions: culture, commerce, gathering, and tourism. The results indicate that although there is a high degree of coupling among these functions, the coordination level is low. This low coordination level is a specific manifestation of various “problems” in the renewal of historical and cultural blocks. Based on this, this paper makes use of the characteristics of spatial development in fold theory, namely continuity, elasticity, and infinity. It delves into the root causes of the above—mentioned problems and formulates targeted sustainable renewal strategies to facilitate the renewal and protection of historical and cultural blocks. The findings emphasize that the sustainable renewal of historical and cultural blocks necessitates not only strengthening the interdependence among functions but also adopting a dynamic and holistic approach to balance historical continuity, functional adaptability, and diversified development, thus unlocking the long—term vitality of urban cultural spaces.
