摘要

Sacred landscapes have ecological and sociocultural values for humankind. However, Sacred sites, often imbued with deep cultural, spiritual, and environmental values, are increasingly threatened by the pressure associated with modernisation. Such pressures include industrialisation, technological innovation, economic growth, and urbanisation. Therefore, the study examines the influence of modernisation on the management and sustainability of sacred sites. The data were collected from 78 respondents through a qualitative approach by employing in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The findings revealed that the management of ecological sacred landscapes encountered many challenges caused by modernisation. Some of the environmental sacred sites, like natural forests, were converted to cropland. Furthermore, local people questioned the relevance of traditional beliefs and practices that were employed in conserving the holy sites. Moreover, modernisation disrupted cultural norms that played a critical role in managing sacred landscapes. It was further found that due to modernisation, the sustainability of sacred sites was questionable. Therefore, there is a need to integrate modern and traditional approaches in managing sacred landscapes.
