Southwest China is experiencing rapid urbanization and facing pressure to protect the ecological environment. Therefore, the relationship between economic development and ecosystem services can vividly reflect the impact of urbanization on ecological environment. In addition, the region has diverse natural resource characteristics, such as rich water sources and biodiversity, which make it a common contradiction between resource exploitation and ecological protection. This reflects similar challenges that other cities may encounter in the process of economic development. Therefore, it has a wide representation in the study. Therefore, to analyze the relationship between economic development and ecosystem services in China, cities in southwest China are taken as a representative. The study uses nighttime light data and multi-scale statistical models to explore the effects of different years and urban economic development on ecosystem services, taking plant net primary productivity, water conservation and soil protection as dependent variables. The research results indicated that economic development had a significant negative impact on vegetation net primary productivity. As the time increased, the negative impact of nighttime light intensity in southwest China decreased from − 0.521 to − 0.368. Among the impacts of economic development in different cities on the NPP of ecosystem vegetation, the maximum negative impact coefficient in Sichuan was − 0.523, and the minimum impact coefficient in Xizang was − 0.347. At various temporal and spatial scales, economic development in southwest China had a positive impact on water conservation and soil conservation in the ecosystem. In the exploration of the impact on soil conservation, the coefficient of nighttime light intensity in southwest China increased from 0.014 to 0.054 from 2013 to 2023. The results show that there are differences in the impact of economic development on ecosystem services in different cities, with the most negative impact in Sichuan and the least impact in Tibet. Economic development has positive effects on water conservation and soil conservation at various time scales. These results provide a theoretical basis for the government to better coordinate the relationship between economic and ecological protection in urban economic development planning, especially in the environmental impact assessment of engineering projects, so as to ensure the sustainability of ecosystem services.

摘要
