Unveiling the drivers of environmentally responsible behavior in Valjevo, Western Serbia: implications for sustainable urban tourism

Tourism destinations are groups of particular stakeholders whose lives are influenced by the actions of both residents and visitors, either by direct or indirect means. Locals interact with the destination more frequently than visitors, and their actions have a stronger impact on the ecosystem and resources. The study aims to explain factors influencing environmentally responsible behavior (ERB) and how cities can create more livable, resilient, and ecologically sustainable urban environments by encouraging and supporting residents to adopt eco-friendly practices. Based on data from Valjevo residents in Western Serbia, this research aims to explain how residents' perceptions of attachment, involvement, and environmental attitudes influence environmentally responsible behavior (ERB). The findings validate a significant relationship between residents' ERB and environmental attitudes, involvement, and attachment. Additionally, residents' involvement and attachment directly affect their environmental attitudes. The findings support the crucial role of locals in environmental conservation and sustainable development. Practical implications provide insights into mitigating the environmental impact of residents' activities, leading to effective solutions for ecosystem protection. These findings can inform decision-makers and community members in planning and implementing laws and practical actions to address negative environmental impacts in tourist areas, thereby supporting sustainable development initiatives.
