Model Tests on Settlement Behavior and Mitigation of Widened Embankments Over Soft Soils

Two model tests were conducted to investigate the settlement mechanism of the widened embankment and evaluate the effectiveness of permeable piles in controlling settlement. The results indicate that in the soft soil foundation model test, the difference settlement at the top of the new and old embankment was 4.39 mm, primarily due to the greater differences in the relative degree of consolidation. In the improved foundation model test using permeable piles with different area replacement ratios, the stiffness of the new and old foundation increased to 3.42 and 2.96 MPa, respectively. The maximum observed difference settlement was 2.18 mm, and the maximum transverse gradient change at the top of the embankment reduced from 0.7 to 0.3%. The use of permeable piles effectively reduces difference settlement in the foundation. These piles reinforce the foundation, increasing its average stiffness from 2.04 to 2.77 MPa. As a result, the settlement is significantly reduced by 5.3 mm, and the difference in relative degree of consolidation is reduced by up to 44%. The relationship between settlement and relative degree of consolidation was thoroughly examined, and empirical relationship formulations were presented.
