<p>The purple appearance of hypocotyl-tuber in turnip is attributed to the anthocyanin content. In this research, we identified the genetic basis underlying anthocyanin accumulation and purple epidermis formation. Genetic analysis revealed that a dominant gene, designated as <i>Pur1</i>, on the short arm of chromosome A05, played a major role in the formation of the purple epidermis phenotype. We mapped the <i>Pur1</i> gene within a 43.38 kbp genomic interval, which contained ten annotated genes according to the ECD04 reference genome. Two genes, <i>BraA05g014086E</i> and <i>BraA05g014093E</i>, which encode an ABA-inducible bHLH-type transcription factor and a WRKY transcription factor, respectively, are identified as the candidate genes. In summary, these findings lay the genetic basis for understanding the purple epidermis trait in turnip hypocotyl-tuber.</p>
