<p>The quality of papaya fruits is determined by their physical, chemical and visual attributes. Alternative methods, such as digital image analysis, allow the efficient and cost-effective evaluation of these characteristics. The objectives of this study were: (i) to perform physical and chemical analyses of the fruits; and (ii) to use colorimetric analysis of digital images to characterize the pulp color of papaya accessions. A total of 110 hermaphroditic accessions from the Solo and Formosa/Intermediate groups of the Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura Germplasm Bank were evaluated at 16&#xa0;months after planting. Each accession was represented by five fruits harvested at ripening stage two and evaluated at stage five. The physical and chemical variables included: fruit mass (FM), length (FL), diameter (FD), FL/FD ratio (LDR), internal cavity diameter (ICD), pulp thickness (PT), fruit firmness (F), soluble solids content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), pH, and SS/TA ratio. Colorimetric analysis was performed using digital images and the colordistance package in the R software. Physical, chemical, and color data were subjected to multivariate analysis. Accessions from the Formosa group presented higher mean values for FM (976.37&#xa0;g), FL (20.76&#xa0;cm), and FD (9.63&#xa0;cm), while the Solo group produced higher SS and SS/TA ratio values. Colorimetric analysis revealed wide variation in pulp color, identifying five groups, with emphasis on G1 (yellow pulp) and G2 (reddish pulp).</p>
