Comparative analyses for determining fruit cracking in jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.)

Fruit cracking (FC) is a common physiological disorder in many fruit species and has profound implications for fruit quality and marketability. Establishing a scientific, accurate, stable and easy-to-use cracking determination method is a key issue in screening crack-resistant varieties, studying the molecular mechanism of cracking and locating cracking-related molecular markers and genes. Chinese jujube is a unique economic tree species that originates from China. FC severely affects the production and quality of jujube and restricts the development of jujube industry. Revealing the mechanism of FC is an important issue for the sustainable development of jujube industry, and cultivating crack-resistant varieties is one of the important goals of jujube breeding. To determine jujube FC more accurately and efficiently, this study compared the vacuum-immersion method (VI), waterfall method, and field test based on the FC trait indexes of different varieties observed by the indoor water immersion method (IWI) over several consecutive years in previous studies, and comprehensively evaluated the different methods of determining jujube FC. It was found that VI can accurately determine the cracking resistance of jujube varieties under 8 min of decompression and 4 h of immersion at 33.33 kPa. The waterfall method can accurately determine cracked jujube at 48 h, but it can’t overcome the shortcomings of IWI. For evaluating cracking-resistance in smaller groups, VI proves to be faster and more efficient; whereas, for larger groups, due to limitations in testing equipment, IWI is simpler and more practical.
