The Impact of Different Facets of Work Family Conflict on Employee’s Discretionary Work Effort Mediated by Employee Engagement

Retaining prospective employees and enhancing employee engagement are the challenging issues for the organisations to have competitive edge over its rivals. The core idea of this research paper is to explore and evaluate the mediating effect of employee engagement as well as the impact of various facets of work-family conflict on the workforce’s discretionary work effort. Simple random sampling was used to collect participant data as it eliminates sampling bias and ensures that all members of the population have an equal chance. The study included 240 active workers in Tamil Nadu and parametric test along with Structural equation modeling was employed. The work demonstrates a significant positive association amongst employee engagement and discretionary work effort. There is no significant difference in the influence of divergent facets of work family conflict on both genders regarding Indian context. The study only includes variables that have a greater impact on employee engagement. Considering the other variables may result in different results. The findings may diverge if the collected data were entirely within a single sector. This study recommended to the organisations to adopt problem coping strategy which will reduce the adverse effect of different facets of work family conflict on discretionary work effort. To unlock discretionary work effort and to curtail the adverse impact of different facets of work family conflict on discretionary work effort, implementation of effective employee engagement strategies and problem focused coping strategy is emphasized.
