The influential mechanisms of digital infrastructure construction on green development in China- A quasi-DID and heterogeneity analysis

Digital infrastructure presents significant opportunities for the green development of resource-based cities characterized by single industrial structures and high energy consumption. However, the nuanced relationship between these two areas has been underexplored. Based on theoretical analysis, this paper employs panel data from 109 resource-based cities from 2006 to 2022 to investigate the impact of digital infrastructure on Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) and its underlying mechanism of action. Findings indicate that digital infrastructure significantly enhances GTFP in resource-based cities, and each 1% increase in the digital infrastructure in resource-based cities can increase GTFP by 0.029%. Key channels for this improvement include green technology innovation, efficient resource allocation, and enhanced energy efficiency. The impact of digital infrastructure is less pronounced in mature resource-based cities. Resource cities with non-energy and higher human capital benefit more from these advancements. These findings underscore the critical role of digital infrastructure in fostering sustainable development in resource-dependent economies, offering valuable insights for policymakers worldwide striving to achieve green growth and urban resilience.
