Does adopting sustainable soil fertility management practices impact economic performance of maize farms in northern Benin?

Northern Benin’s maize production faces persistent challenges of low productivity and declining soil fertility, exacerbated by unsustainable farming practices and increasing climate variability. To address these issues, we investigate whether adopting sustainable soil and fertilizer management (SSFM) practices, specifically organic fertilizers and crops association, can enhance the economic performance of maize farms. A cross-sectional dataset of 262 maize farmers, from a multistage random sampling approach, multinomial logit selection (MNLS) for the first stage and regression of multinomial endogenous switching (MESR) for the second stage, while controlling for selection bias. We found that experienced farmers exhibit a greater propensity to embrace organic fertilizers. In contrast, elevated educational attainment correlates with a diminished likelihood of adopting both organic fertilizers and crops association. Farmers engaged in the cultivation of legumes, individuals possessing access to financial credit, participants of agricultural cooperatives, and those involved in extension services or demonstration trials exhibit a higher propensity to implement SSFM practices. Crops association independently resulted in a significant yield enhancement of 316 kg/ha, surpassing non-adopters, outperforming organic fertilizers alone (+ 113 kg/ha). Crops association generated a higher income gain (+ $ 157.75/ha) than organic fertilizers alone (+ $ 57.73/ha). These findings underscore the crucial role of SSFM practices in enhancing both yield and income for maize farmers in northern Benin. A shift to more sustainable agricultural practices in northern Benin is essential, with an emphasis on crops diversification, technical training, and financing to enhance food security and alleviate poverty.
