<p>Promoting the advancement of energy transition represents a critical imperative in addressing pressing environmental challenges and facilitating sustainable, high-quality economic development. A comprehensive investigation into the impact mechanisms of the new energy demonstration city (NEDC) policy on energy transition processes not only provides substantial theoretical contributions to the field of energy economics but also yields robust empirical evidence for policy evaluation and optimization, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of NEDC implementation strategies. This study utilizes city-level panel data from China to construct a comprehensive energy transition development index through an established index system and the entropy weighting method. Employing the difference-in-differences (DID) approach, we systematically evaluate the impact of the NEDC policy on energy transition development and its underlying mechanisms. The study finds that: (1) The NEDC policy exerts a significantly positive influence on energy transition development, with this effect demonstrating robustness across various sensitivity analyses. (2) Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the policy’s effectiveness varies substantially across regions, showing particularly pronounced impacts in eastern region, non-resource-based cities, and large metropolitan areas. (3) Nonlinear regression results demonstrate that the policy’s marginal effects exhibit dynamic evolution. (4) Spatial econometric analysis reveals that NEDC policy fosters positive spatial spillover effects, with pilot cities facilitating regional technological diffusion and coordinated development through demonstration effects, rather than engaging in predatory competition with neighboring areas. (5) Mechanism analysis identifies financial support and technological innovation as the primary channels through which the NEDC policy drives energy transition development. (6) Extension analysis suggests that while the NEDC policy effectively elevates the overall level of energy transition, it does not significantly enhance regional convergence in energy transition development. These insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers to further NEDC policy and accelerate energy transition development.</p>
