<p>Improving green total factor productivity (GTFP) in urban areas is essential for advancing sustainable urban development in China. This paper utilizes China's national Information Benefits the People pilot policy as a quasi-natural experiment for digital government construction (DGC). Employing panel data from Chinese cities between 2010 and 2020, we establish a difference-in-differences (DID) model to identify the causal relationship between DGC and urban green total factor productivity (GTFP). The findings indicate that DGC can increase urban GTFP, a result validated through robustness tests. Mechanism analysis reveals that DGC facilitates industrial upgrading, stimulates green technological innovation, and increases environmental protection expenditures, all of which contribute to enhancing urban GTFP. Further heterogeneity analysis reveals that DGC exerts a stronger impact on GTFP in eastern China and in regions with strong economic development, advanced technology, and well-developed digital infrastructure. The findings of this paper offer replicable theoretical support and policy implications for developing countries striving to achieve sustainable development.</p>
