The spatial dynamics and underlying mechanisms of the digital economy’s impact on carbon emission intensity: empirical insights from 30 Chinese provinces
摘要
This study investigates the spatial dynamics and underlying mechanisms through which the digital economy (DIGE) influences carbon emission intensity (CEI) across 30 Chinese provinces during 2011–2021. Introducing the concept of spatial spillover at the outset, we apply a Spatial Durbin Model to capture both local and neighboring effects. Our results show that a 10% increase in the DIGE index corresponds to a 6.3% reduction in local CEI and a 4.1% reduction in neighboring provinces’ CEI. A multiple mediation analysis further reveals that these effects operate through three concurrent pathways: energy intensity (45%), financial development (35%), and technological innovation (20%). Robustness checks and heterogeneity analyses indicate more pronounced impacts in resource-abundant provinces. However, our conclusions are subject to two key limitations: the spatial weight matrix and boundary delineation may affect the estimated spillovers, and several provinces were excluded due to incomplete data. Future research should refine spatial boundaries and extend coverage to ensure a more comprehensive assessment.
