Dynamics of Mangrove ecosystem in Ramsar site 1017 face to climate change in Southern Benin (West Africa)

Mangrove ecosystems in developing countries are undergoing accelerated degradation due to intensified human activities, particularly those related to the direct exploitation of forest resources by riparian communities. In Benin, these anthropogenic pressures have led to a significant decline in mangrove cover, decreasing from 13,306.05 hectares in 1995 to 9,452.52 hectares in 2015, representing a 29% reduction over twenty years. In response, Benin has ratified several international conventions, including the Ramsar Convention, to strengthen mangrove protection. This study focuses on the spatio-temporal dynamics of land use, particularly mangrove ecosystems, at Ramsar Site 1017. A mixed-methods approach was adopted. First, a cartographic analysis was conducted using Landsat, SPOT, and Sentinel satellite imagery for the years 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. Second, data from national forest inventories (IFN1 and IFN2) were analyzed to validate observed trends. Results show a significant decline in mangrove cover from 1980 to 2020, with the most severe reduction over 11,432 ha, occurring between 1990 and 2000. However, the rate of decline slowed in the subsequent decades, with net losses reduced to 430 ha (2000–2010) and just 27 ha (2010–2020). This trend reversal reflects the positive impact of reforestation and conservation measures implemented in the 2000s. These findings highlight the effectiveness of conservation efforts and underscore the critical need to sustain and scale up such initiatives. Continued monitoring, community engagement, and integrated management are essential to safeguarding mangroves and enhancing their resilience against ongoing environmental and human-induced threats.
