Assessing inland cage aquaculture diversification for sustainable fisheries enhancement in a tropical reservoir

Inland cage aquaculture in reservoirs is an emerging technology for food and livelihood security in India. The current study emphases on diversification of fish species in cages at Palair, a tropical reservoir in Peninsular India. Galvanized Iron (GI) cages (64 numbers) of 5 m×5 m×4 m were stocked with seeds of pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), rohu (Labeo rohita), Jayanti strain of rohu (L. rohita), stunted Jayanti rohu (L. rohita) and scampi (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). The results showed that Jayanti rohu and pangas performed better in terms of weight gain, specific growth rate and feed utilization, whereas scampi and normal rohu performed moderately in cages. The final weights attained were 220, 982 and 1295 g for rohu, Jayanti rohu and stunted Jayanti rohu respectively in 300 days. Pangas attained an average weight of 1184 g in 300 days whereas scampi realized 32 g in 180 days. The stunted Jayanti rohu had the highest benefit: cost (B: C) ratio (1.8) followed by Jayanti rohu (1.7) and pangas. The cage farm had no discernible effect on the physico-chemical characteristics of the reservoir water (p > 0.05). The study also proposes a framework for sustainable expansion of cage farming in tropical reservoirs.
