<p>Digital transformation is widely recognized as a key driving force for enabling energy conservation, emission reduction, and sustainable development across various industries, including transportation. In the context of the ‘dual carbon’ goals, clarifying the mechanism by which regional digitalization level (RDL) impacts carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector (CERT) is a critical issue that must be addressed for achieving low-carbon transformation. To this end, this study employs dynamic panel data from 30 provincial regions in China from 2011 to 2021, utilizing econometric models, a coupling coordination model, and the Dagum Gini coefficient to comprehensively reveal the dual effects of RDL on CERT. The results indicate that RDL has a significant positive direct effect on CERT, with a 1-unit increase in RDL resulting in a 0.204-unit increase in CERT, and R&amp;D plays a notably positive mediating role in this process. Although there is a significant synergistic effect between RDL and CERT, it exhibits notable spatial and temporal differences. Further analysis shows that the level of synergy between the two gradually improved during the study period, displaying a regional distribution pattern characterized by “high in the east, low in the west.” This study expands the research perspective on CERT and provides theoretical support and empirical evidence for promoting cross-regional collaborative carbon reduction in the transportation sector within the context of digital transformation.</p>
