<p>In the face of escalating environmental degradation and the depletion of natural resources, the role of urban green supply chain (GSC) innovation pilots in mitigating carbon emissions has garnered growing attention. Given this context, an accurate evaluation of the effects of city-level GSC pilot policies on carbon emissions is critical for advancing urban green and low-carbon transformation, while also fostering sustainable, high-quality urban development. This paper empirically investigates the effects, underlying mechanisms, and heterogeneity of the impact of city GSC pilots on carbon emission reduction, utilizing data from 271 prefecture-level cities in China from 2013 to 2021. The findings reveal that GSC pilots contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions in pilot cities. Furthermore, green innovation, industrial structure optimization, and green credit support have a positive impact on the carbon emission reduction effects of the pilot policy. Additional analysis indicates that the carbon reduction effect of GSC pilots is more pronounced in larger cities, non-northeastern regions, and cities that are not heavily reliant on resource extraction. The results offer important theoretical insights into the development of green and circular supply chains, while also serving as valuable reference points for policymakers aiming to implement GSC policies effectively to achieve sustainable urban development.</p>
