The green supply chain conundrum: exploring the interplay of practices, performance, and technology in shaping SME sustainability in developing country

The growing eco-awareness of the general population regarding environmental issues, such as climate change, global warming, and ecological degradation, alongside global conservation initiatives by governments and institutions, highlights the critical need to explore environmentally sustainable integration within supply chain management. The present study seeks to explore the effect of the impact of green supply chain management practices (GSCMP) on green supply chain performance (GSCP), the effect of GSCP on environmental performance (EP), and finally, the impact of EP on green competitive advantage (GCA). Two mediators, including green technology (GT) and green supply performance, were studied together. The study was conducted by surveying 300 employees of SME manufacturers and analyzing both direct and mediation pathways using PLS-SEM. The empirical evidence revealed that direct effects of green purchasing (GP), product eco-design (PED), reverse logistics (RL), and GSCP contribute substantially to enhancing the association of EP and GCA. Moreover, the partial mediation effect of green supply chain performance on the association between green supply chain practices, including GP, PED, and RL, was suggested. Lastly, the partial mediation effect of GT between GSCP and EP was confirmed. Thus, to attain a green competitive advantage, policymakers and SME practitioners in the developing country of Pakistan can utilize the insights provided by these results to enhance sustainability and competitiveness through targeted GSC approaches.
