Manufacturing servitization and global carbon transfers: decarbonization or displacement?

Manufacturing servitization is increasingly proposed as a carbon emission reduction solution. However, existing studies often examine the emission reduction effects of manufacturing servitization from the perspective of a single economy or industry, but overlook the global carbon emission transfer caused by the geographical separation of production and consumption. In view of this, this study explores the extensive relationship between manufacturing servitization and carbon emission transfer by measuring the servitization levels of 17 manufacturing industries in 74 countries, as well as carbon emissions at the consumption and production ends. The results of this comprehensive study show that servitization reduces carbon emissions on the production side while increasing emissions at the consumption end, thereby driving carbon emission transfer. Additionally, we find that servitization exacerbates carbon emission transfer particularly through the value chain and outsourcing mechanisms. Extended analysis further reveals that the impact of servitization on carbon emission transfer is more pronounced in countries with high outsourcing dependence and a positive net carbon emission transfer effect. Moreover, domestic servitization and modern servitization have become the main sources stimulating carbon emission transfer. By integrating both sides of carbon emission intensity into an analytical framework to determine the environmental impact of servitization, this study provides fresh insights into the increasingly significant issue of carbon emission equilibrium in the context of the division of the global industry.
