Effect of labor migration on famers’ biopesticide application --mediating effect based on social network

Chemical pesticides serve as the primary means of pest control in China, yet their prolonged excessive and irrational application has led to increasingly severe soil and water contamination, with escalating risks to agricultural product quality and safety. In contrast, by virtue of their low toxicity, minimal residue, high safety for humans and livestock, and environmental friendliness, biopesticides closely align with the intrinsic imperatives of sustainable development in modern agriculture. Notably, smallholder farmers constitute over 98% of China’s agricultural entities, positioning them as the primary decision-makers and end-users of biopesticides. However, contemporary rural China is undergoing extensive and profound labor migration. Substantial outflows of rural laborers to non-agricultural industries have profoundly altered labor structures, income sources, resource endowments, and production/operation decision-making models within rural households. Therefore, under the increasingly common situation of rural labor migration, this paper, based on the research data of 814 farmers in Sichuan Province, adopts the propensity score matching method and mediated effect model to explore the influence of labor transfer on farmers’ biopesticide application behavior, which is of great significance in solving the problem of agricultural product quality and safety and realizing the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas.The results found (1) 32.1% of the surveyed household business decision makers had labor migration experience, and labor migration significantly reduced the mean value of biopesticide application by 5.056 units. (2) In terms of mechanism of action, it was found that labor migration inhibited biopesticide application by weakening the frequency of social interaction, social reciprocity, and social learning motivation of farmers. (3) In terms of heterogeneity, farmers with lower agricultural income and farmers working far from home further reduced biopesticide application by 3.89 and 3.45 units, respectively. Therefore, this study concludes that strengthening and expanding the social network of farmers and constructing a rural acquaintance environment with high learning, trust, interaction and reciprocity can effectively increase the enthusiasm of farmers in applying biopesticides, which is conducive to promoting the coordinated development of the rural ecological environment and economic benefits.
