Indicating energy activities and consumption at the village scale in Northern China—the case of Dongqiaotou village in Shandong Province

Rural household energy consumption plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability and exacerbates the rural-urban energy divide, yet detailed village-level assessments remain limited. This study investigates the energy consumption patterns and potential for renewable energy integration in Dongqiaotou Village, Shandong Province, China. Through comprehensive surveys and semi-structured interviews, we conducted a village-scale analysis and collected 84 household survey responses, achieving a coverage rate of 19%. And we divided the village energy consumption system into six subsystems: household living, public facilities, agriculture, livestock breeding, industry, and environmental management subsystem. The results indicate that electricity (36%) and coal (41%) constitute the majority of energy sources, especially in household and public facility subsystems. Additionally, renewable energy options like solar, straw, and manure show high potential for integration, with estimated biogas generation from livestock manure alone amounting to 497 tons of standard coal per year. Implementing renewable sources could reduce dependency on external energy imports by up to 30%. This study analyzes household and village-level energy consumption structures and potential, offering insights into photovoltaic and distributed energy solutions. The findings provide a foundation for future research and policy efforts aimed at promoting clean energy adoption and advancing rural energy sustainability.
