Integrated relationship between green development and digital economy in Zhejiang Province, China: Basing on improved coupling coordination degree model

Digital Economy and Green Development are two engines in China’s development of New Economy. Exploring the integration of Green Development and Digital Economy is an important way to realize the high-quality development. Existed studies have analyzed the Green Development or Digital Economy in China while few have studied integration of Green Development and Digital Economy. Taking Zhejiang Province as a case, this study analyzes the integration of Green Development and Digital Economy in 11 municipal administrative districts of Zhejiang Province in 2014–2020 via improved Coupling Coordination Degree Model and spatial econometric approach with an aim to contribute to related government policy making. Combing the previously accepted evaluating index with specific situation of Zhejiang Province, this study establishes evaluating index systems of Green Development and Digital Economy with 7 subsystems and 37 indicators. Indicator weight is determined by both Structure Entropy Method and Mean Squared Deviation Method. Development level of Green Development and Digital Economy are evaluated with Comprehensive Development Index, with which are used to analyze the integration in improved Coupling Coordination Degree Model and Spatial Autoregression Model. Following results are reached: (1) Green Development in Zhejiang province is ranked as Hangzhou > Zhoushan > Taizhou > Lishui > Wenzhou > Huzhou > Shaoxing > Jinhua > Ningbo > Jinhua > Quzhou while Digital Economy in Zhejiang province ranked as Hangzhou > Ningbo > Jiaxing > Jinhua > Wenzhou > Huzhou > Shaoxing > Quzhou > Zhoushan > Taizhou > Lishui. (2) Except Hangzhou, Green Development outpaces Digital Economy in all municipal districts in Zhejiang Province. (3) Hangzhou has the best coordination between Green Development and Digital Economy reaching Superior Balanced stage while the other districts remained in Barely Balanced stage. (4) Digital Economy in one district not only improves Green Development in this district, but also benefits Green Development in its surrounding districts.
