<p>Electric vehicle battery recycling is crucial to achieving societal sustainability, yet few studies have explored the conflicting psychology behind formal electric vehicle battery recycling behaviors. In response, our study proposes an extended behavioural reasoning theory model, which consists of 12 theoretical hypotheses to shed light on the decision-making patterns behind formal EV battery recycling behavior. Using 1,193 samples collected from Chongqing, China, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and analyze the mediation and moderation effects, as well as the impact of individual heterogeneity. Results indicate that trust awareness (TA) positively influences the reasons for (RFF) choosing formal recycling outlets (path coefficient of 0.707, p &lt; 0.001), while environmental concern (EC) positively affects the reasons against (RAF) (path coefficient of 0.073, p &lt; 0.001). The positive correlation between RFF and attitude (ATT) has a path coefficient of 0.420 (p &lt; 0.001), and the negative correlation between RAF and intention (INT) has a path coefficient of -0.115 (p &lt; 0.001). Herd mentality (HM) moderates the negative effect of RAF on INT, with a correlation of -0.468 (p &lt; 0.001). Finally, age and education level are the main sources of individual heterogeneity in the battery recycling market, especially for individuals aged 45 and above and those with primary school education or below. Our study suggest that enhancing TA and reducing EC are crucial for promoting formal EV battery recycling.</p>

Formal recycling for retired electric vehicle batteries: Behavioral insights into consumer preferences in chongqing
