Participation of the green school community in conserving environment and disaster mitigation: a case study in Surakarta, Indonesia
摘要
The green school program, or Adiwiyata, is designed to create caring and environmentally cultured schools in Indonesia. This program can serve as an effort to preserve the environment and mitigate flood disasters. This study aims to analyze the role of green schools in protecting the environment and contributing to disaster mitigation. It is located at three national green schools in Surakarta: State Senior High School 3 Surakarta, State Junior High School 1 Surakarta, and State Junior High School 8 Surakarta. This study employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research. Field observations and interviews utilized qualitative methods, while questionnaire-based surveys employed quantitative methods. The findings indicate that implementing green school programs through various innovations, such as creating solar cells for hydroponics, establishing waste banks and composting systems, and developing vertical gardens, helps preserve the environment. The majority of students at the study sites exhibit good knowledge and attitudes regarding environmental management efforts and support the application of the bio-pore method to reduce the risk of flooding. A positive relationship exists between knowledge about environmental management and students’ attitudes toward environmental care and flood disaster mitigation. The implications of this study suggest that green school programs are critical for environmental management and preservation, which can positively impact flood disaster mitigation efforts.
