<p>While energy poverty (EP) is acknowledged as a critical global issue and has attracted scholarly interest, empirical evidence regarding its impact on subjective relative deprivation (SRD) remains scarce. The principal aim of this study is to investigate the causality between EP and SRD among households in China. Using China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data from 2014 to 2020, we apply a panel two-way fixed effects model to ascertain the relationship, heterogeneity, and mechanisms between EP and SRD. EP is operationalized through measures of energy unaffordability (EU) and clean energy inaccessibility (CEI). The study reveals that households experiencing EU exhibit an average increase of 0.0135 points in SRD compared to those who are energy-affordable, while households with CEI show an increase of 0.0225 points compared to their energy-accessible counterparts. The impacts of EU and CEI on SRD display heterogeneity across different geographical contexts, including northern regions, low-carbon pilot cities, and urban settings. EU intensifies SRD through adverse effects on physical and mental health and heightened poverty vulnerability. Similarly, CEI augments SRD by increasing poverty vulnerability. The findings bolster decision-making among energy, economic, and social policymakers. The study proposes policy recommendations for increased investment in clean energy infrastructure, expansion of energy assistance programs, and endorsement of innovative energy poverty alleviation initiatives.</p>
