Digital and geographical mobility: correlating technological bilateral trade impact on sustainable trade development between China and East Asia

Digital innovation is widely recognized as a driver of trade growth, while the combined effect of digitalization and technological bilateral trade on sustainable trade-adjusted development remains insufficiently explored. This study examines the impacts of digital and geographical mobility, alongside bilateral trade in technology, on sustainable trade-adjusted development between China and 16 East Asian countries. Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSEs), Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) regression with instrumental variables, and Quantile regression techniques were employed to analyze the data. The findings indicate that digital mobility, geographical mobility, and bilateral trade in technology-related goods and services have a negative while bilateral trade in computers and communication technology reported a positive effect on sustainable trade-adjusted development. Additionally, government consumption and GDP per capita growth support sustainable trade-adjusted development, whereas government expenditure tends to hinder it. Threshold analysis highlights critical levels of digital mobility required to optimize the interplay between technological bilateral trade and geographical mobility for sustainable trade development. These insights provide actionable recommendations for policymakers to promote digitalization by fostering trade efficiency while reducing geographical challenges essential for trade sustainability.
