Spatio-temporal evolution of ecosystem service values and strategies analysis for implementation in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration of China

In the context of rapid population growth and urban sprawl, understanding ecosystem service value (ESV) is profound and valuable for improving urban ecosystem management and planning. However, most of the existing research on ESV concentrates more on assessment and its driver analysis, and rarely involves the strategies analysis in the conflict for implementing the policy of ESV. To overcome this gap, this article built a novel analysis framework for ESV policy by utilizing the improved equivalent factor table, spatial autocorrelation analysis, hotspot analysis and graph model for conflict resolution (GMCR). Then, taking the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRDUA) as an example, this article explored the spatio-temporal evolution of the ESV and the strategies selection of each stakeholder in the conflicts for implementing of ESV policy. The analysis results showed: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the ESVs were slightly on the rise, increasing from 1.46 billion USD to 1.55 billion USD. (2) In terms of spatial distribution, ESVs were higher in northern regions compared to the south, showing a spatial positive correlation. Urban planners should consider differentiated policies based on ESV in future planning of the YRDUA. (3) When implementing ESV policy, only by changing the existing attitudes or strategies for implementing ESV policies among all stakeholders in conflicts can we maintain ecological balance and biodiversity and provide better living conditions for humanity. In summary, the analysis result help us to understand the significance of carrying out ESV in the YRDUA for the local environment and residents, and to know the difficulties in implementing ESV policy, also serve as a guide for sustainable development in different countries and regions.
