Assessing the key enablers for circular economy adoption for industrial symbiosis: evidence from an Indian automotive component manufacturing industry

A circular economy (CE) emphasizes regenerative and restorative design approaches to the production system in order to push the boundaries of sustainability. The implementation of CE principles radically changes a company’s business model. The automotive company has focused its interest on how to deal with end-of-life (EoL) vehicles. The EoL vehicles could function as a backup source of resources because they have a wider range of parts and components. CE plays a pivotal role in reusing these types of materials when they are efficiently recovered. This research examined the enablers of the adoption of CE and managerial practices in the Indian automotive manufacturing industry. A comprehensive literature survey and expert consultation led to the identification of 15 enablers. The prioritization and causal relationship of enablers were examined using the ‘grey decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory’ (DEMATEL) method. ‘Proper checking and tracking of waste material,’ ‘proper implementation of the 6R principle,’ and ‘enhancing competitiveness promises’ are found to be the most prominent, influencing, and resulting enablers, respectively. The present study provides a road map for managers and decision-makers interested in implementing CE practices and designing a circular business model (CBM).
